Re: Wind Speed

I used to like to teach my students who already had some experience fly on a windy day. They fought the wind for each flight but the next calmer time out you could see they were better pilots just from the fight with the wind.

Re: Wind Speed

A swimmer fights the waves, a surfer looks for and rides them.

A motor boat skipper bucks the storm but a sailor fears the calm.

Watch the gulls and hawks work the power in the air currents and learn.

Grab a pure glider and head for a good slope, you will come back a better pilot with a whole new attitude toward wind!

lol

edit - I think your basic 40 size trainer would be fine up to 40 km/h, but like others said that depends on your experience. If someone is learning, I think it's great to learn in winds up to 20 at least and get used to it. It pays off in not having to wait for a "perfect day" to fly. The wind can be your friend.

Short take offs and landings.

I still get a kick out of throttling back, feed in a bit of up elevator and see how long I can stay in one place like a kite on a string. Sometimes if the wind is strong enough you can fly slowly backwards!

My son in law once stopped his plane 5 feet off the runway and picked it out of the air with one hand. Suddenly all the guys that had stopped flying because it was too windy were in the air again trying to do the same thing!

Re: Wind Speed

My rule of thumb for a parkflyer sized high wing trainer is 20km/h. Typically in those winds I do not use flaps either as that just makes the plane too lofty to get on the ground. If you are flying into the wind it is much easier, anything quartering the runway is excellent training for landing your plane while crabbing.

Exactly, i use to have a trainer plane that I lend to students on students nights (skyward 40).
And on the days that's too windy for them to fly instructors take turns on flying it and just, for the fun of it, land it backwards, or do a vrtical take of.
So, it's all about skills and how much you love your plane.

Re: Wind Speed

It is not much wind speed, but direction. They can handle pretty strong head wind, but not cross wind
