What to cut Plexiglas with??

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
I have quite few sheets of different color and thicknesses of Plexiglas sheets that i want to make different fixtures for building purposes with. I'm not sure what i can use to cut it with, can i use my scroll saw for this purpose by using heavier cutting blade, plus what type of blade could be used:

Coarse tooth or fine tooth?.....

Thanks

Re: What to cut Plexiglas with??

if you have a jigsaw, use fine tooth but keep the protective covering on plexi wile cutting. if using bandsaw the same goes for that as well.
cheers

Hi

I have found that useing soap on the cut line , helps keep thing from sticking to-gether . It also acts as a coolant .

Re: What to cut Plexiglas with??

Actually (and I am speaking from quite a bit of experience) cutting with too fine a blade will allow the soft heated plexiglass to gum up the blade.

You can use a fairly coarse blade, but cut at a slower speed and feed a little slower, allow the chips to clear, rather than get hot, and stick to the gullets (the spaces between the teeth) which causes a lot of issues.

I cut plexi with my bandsaw, and an 8 TPI blade. It does chip a little bit, but I file or sand the final edge and once the edge is bevelled its perfect.

If you have a straight line, you can score it with a sharp scribe an snap it. Just like glass.

Re: What to cut Plexiglas with??

I am with AJ on this one ,as a rule of thumb the softer the material the more agressive the blade(another rule I go by is make sure that no less than 3 teeth on the blade equal the thickness of the material)or the material is prone to going between the teeth this can jam & break the blade ,this is a bigger problem on a scroll because the blade actually stops to change direction.Roger

PS: cool idea about the dish soap .

I use teflon spray on all my power tools, and some of my hand tools.

Not very much can stick to teflon, and it keeps the tools rust free (I mostly cut wood and only a little plastic)

I use a lot of Bostik topcoat and dricoat - topcoat actually works well on tools also.
