4 Stroke Engine Decarbonization

I have a 4 stroke Engine that Is quite a lot of carbon in it as brown crud in it. I have heard that after disassembling the Engine that parts can be cleaned in a slow cooker bath of antifreeze, on low heat setting. Has anyone utilized this method? If so is it successful?

Re: 4 Stroke Engine Decarbonization

The antifreeze does work when the engine is apart. Another way is running some fuel injector cleaner through the engine if its in running condition. If this method works you don't have to take the engine apart. Most issues with 4-Strokes is lack of compression, caused by valve stem varnish, that doesn't let the valve close or a stuck ring from the varnish also. I've used 1 ounce of fuel injector cleaner to a 10 or 12 ounce tank on my test stand and it does work. On bad engines I've used two tanks. An old recommendation from Clarence Lee. Cheers Floyd

An ultrasonic cleaner is the very best way.

Thanks Floyd, for the advice. Just one thought; my 4 Stroke fuel has 18% oil in it and adding the injector cleaner reduces it to 16% in a 10 oz tanks. meanwhile the engine manual requirements is 20%.

Just run it richer and you'll be fine. Some 4-Strokes can run less than 16% oil.
I'm mixing 15% for a friends 4-Stroke. Cheers Floyd

Re: 4 Stroke Engine Decarbonization

OK, I will have to try that. Any particular brand of Injector cleaner you use?

Look for a name brand that's on sale. If you run Castor oil in your 4-Stroke you can ad 1-2 ounces of fuel injector cleaner to your jug to help keep it clean inside also. Another Clarence Lee trick. Cheers Floyd

I will add that to the shopping list and I have changed to synthetic oil for 4 strokes.

Re: 4 Stroke Engine Decarbonization

Where do you get your spark plugs and what is a reasonable amount to pay?

Re: 4 Stroke Engine Decarbonization

If you've changed to Synthetic oil your engine should stay clean without the injector cleaner.
I sell OS type F plugs for $12.00 each. I think most places are more money. Cheers Floyd
