Distance To Go Flying Poll

I fly at a fantastic field. It is huge, unobstructed and less than 10 minutes away. The big problem is our club is down to 4 or 5 members and it seems that I am the only active flyer. I’m retired so once a week simply does not cut it for me and flying alone is not allowed. I could join another club which is a 40 minute drive away. Thier field is smaller and obstructed. My question is, how far do you travel to go flying?

I am also curious how often people fly, and if the distance to the field has an impact on that number?

Re: Distance To Go Flying Poll

Depends on where I'm flying. If I'm going to the Regina Windy Flyers field which is closest to my home, about 20 minutes. If I'm going to Moose Jaw Radio Control Aircraft Club which is where I'll do my jet flying, about 45 minutes.

Just going off the top of my head, I think there's about 70 members in Regina, but it's regularly about the same 6-8 people that I see. I just recently joined the Moose Jaw club and there's about 28 members. There's 3 of us that go there from Regina for jet flying and I only see about 1 or 2 people from Moose Jaw flying, but I haven't been a member there for very long.

Re: Distance To Go Flying Poll

If I did not fly alone I would fly about 5% the flights I fly presently. You should talk with your club about setting up a check in system so people can fly alone. We have to do it at work when working alone. A Text when you arrive and a text to a person every 15 minutes until you leave at which point you text to say you are leaving the site.If they do not here from you at check in they try to call and if no answer they come or send someone looking to see why you did not check in. This could be a wife, other member or an answering service. Take care

Re: Distance To Go Flying Poll

I think you’ll find it depends on where people are located and what kind of planes they fly. My theory is that, what we’d consider a long drive here in NB would be considered reasonable or even short in the GTA for example.

For me, it’s a 20-30 minute drive to the RMA field in Hillsborough. Depends on time of day and season. It’s a 2-lane road leading to Fundy Park, so sometimes you get stuck behind trailers etc. Not as big a problem this year (gee I wonder why??).

To me, flying alone gets old fast. Usually if I’m thinking of hitting the field I’ll send out an email to club members in advance, and see if there’s any interest. You might give that a try, if you haven’t already.

Re: Distance To Go Flying Poll

We give each other a heads up with an email. I am the only person who EVER puts out an email looking for people to go flying. Also, I would love to fly alone but it is a carved in stone, never to be broken rule to always have a spotter.

Re: Distance To Go Flying Poll

Back when I started the field was approx 35 minutes away. With road changes and traffic that had increased by 10 minutes.

For the last 10 years have been at a private field 15 minutes out, with the advantage only 3 minutes from family that moved back so they can come watch.

Re: Distance To Go Flying Poll

We notify fellow Club members through Facebook messenger. Always works and we never fly alone. The Miramichi club has 5 members and normally on a weekend there is 4 to 5 pilots when we get together. Very dedicated bunch to having fun.

Re: Distance To Go Flying Poll

I can fly alone at my field, about a 15 minute drive from home. But alone lacks. Perverted me wants to have someone witness my humiliation. (Power in to the ground or lose it in the wind)
