Recommend a Sound System for Electric Plane

Well, september is here! Time to start thinking about winter projects!

I am thinking of building a 1/7 scale Top Flite P-51B Mustang. I am toying with the idea of building it as electric. If I do this, I MUST include a sound system to simulate the engine sound.

Has anyone experimented with the various systems available? If so, please give me your opinion and info on the system. At this point, I do not know what to buy or where to buy it.

in advance!!

Re: Recommend a Sound System for Electric Plane

I've been eyeing a few sound systems myself. Biggest thing preventing me from pulling the trigger is the need to cut holes in the aiframe for speakers!

So far I've found 3 outfits selling systems:

This one is actually in Canada:
http://www.modelsoundsinc.com/index.htm

These guys distribute the Benedini system in North America:
http://www.aerosoundrc.com/index.htm

And lastly this is an outfit I've just learned of:
http://www.mrrcsound.com/

There's a huge thread on the Benedini system in the Electric Warbirds forums over an RC Groups. Might be a good place to mine some info.

Although I know nothing about them Model Sounds was at both our zone fun fly & the 25th IMAA event. I was way too busy shooting photos to check them out.

I have to say... You've got to be kidding, or you don't have neighbours who care about noise. Our club had to set rules for noise reduction (no nitro > .55, < 94db at 3 meters full throttle)... Or we would have had to close. We didn"t have a choice. That or close.

Re: Recommend a Sound System for Electric Plane

Would be interesting to have a system that would monitor the distance, power setting, etc, and would send the sound to ear phones for the pilot. Wouldn't disturbe anyone, and would'nt change the plane at all.

Thx for the links!

Has anyone used any of these systems?

Sick, ain't it?

From what I've been reading, these systems don't match the noise levels put out by typical nitro engines. They are loud... but not that loud. Plus, if you're flying somewhere where noise is an issue... you can always switch it off.

That said... Merlin engines and big ol' radials don't make noise... they make *music*!

Re: Recommend a Sound System for Electric Plane

I do not want this thread to turn into a discussion about noise levels. Please start a thread for that if you wish to discuss it.

Thank You

At risk of being shot down in flames here I will say this. The whole idea is to make an electric fighter or bomber sound more realistic. What would you prefer - having it sound like a weed whacker or sound like a V12 Merlin or a Pratt and Whitney radial? You can adjust the volume down if necessary and you can even do that remotely on our ShockWave sound module.

I would venture to say that the genuine sound of a real aero-engine is far preferrable to the sound of either an electric motor or a gas/nitro engine. Like CF105 said above, a real aero-engine sound is "Music to the ears", not noise at all!
