Slope soaring compliance

I'm just wondering what you fellows are doing at your favorite slope to be in compliance with the new TC rules and MAAC field guidelines? Is there a way to accomplish this?

I lost my best south facing slope so want to make the next one legal if possible.

Re: Slope soaring compliance

If you haven't already, how far to the nearest airfield of any sort? Is there the potential for the public to approach from forward of your flight line? Are there any power or telephone lines nearby? Are you already a member of MAAC because if you have such a place, you are covered provided you have permission from the owner (or you are the owner). Do you see a constant procession of aircraft on their way to an airport that is still far enough to allow you to fly in that location? If so, you might have some issues if you get up over the 400ft. limit come June 1st or 300ft. before June 1st and they spot your glider. I am aware of the normal routine of slope gliding where you really don't get any real altitude compared to where you are standing. Do you see any houses ahead of your flight line (you are up on top of a fairly good sized slope, I presume, and can see a good distance)? If you are good with the above, I don't particularly see any reason that you would have a problem provided you keep your MAAC card with you when you're flying. As far as I know, MAAC covers you where ever you fly as long as you use reasonable care of where you fly and abide by any TC prohibitions. Hope this might jog some others to comment.

Re: Slope soaring compliance

My understanding is that we need to make our slopes a alternate field to an established MAAC club. Just land owner permission is not enough anymore.

I also understand that TC does not actually require insurance. Just that we fly at a MAAC field and follow MAAC rules.

I have never heard of a MAAC field on a slope though. Maybe we can do it - until the wind shifts, then we need another MAAC field registered for the hill that favors that wind direction. Where I live 2 slopes would cover most of the prevailing winds.

Re: Slope soaring compliance

I haven't seen that in any MAAC requirements but I am not saying that it not the case. If it is as simple as adding it to an existing clubs' field list, go for it. Our club has one outdoor and three indoor venues so why not have a gliding slope(s) added to a club. Makes sense and doesn't cost anything to add it.

Re: Slope soaring compliance

My understanding is that TC does not want to see anymore lone flyers with land owner permission. Just MAAC club fields. So we just need to register the slope as an alternate field I think. Should be simple enough as long as we aren't required to have pilot stations, safety fences, setbacks, warning signs and the whole gamut that MAAC requires at regular fields.

Re: Slope soaring compliance

For all you timid guys that are too afraid to stand up and tell us what your plan is, I was out scouting hills today and think I came up with a winner. I'm guessing 400 feet high. SE, South and SW faces. A nice bit of flat valley upwind and here is the best part - it's in a hidden remote valley with absolutely no roads or human habitation 15 minutes from home! Just the hawks, ravens, cows and coyotes for witnesses.

I even have the land owner's permission! So I could apply for it to be an alternate field... but who would really care one way or another!

Feeling a bit smug!

Re: Slope soaring compliance

I just have to secure a NW facing one now and I have it picked out. Will hunt down the land owner soon.

I might share too if you asked nicely. And can keep a secret...
