Is Radiomaster TX16s worth buying?

Hello. I'm new to RCCanada and is my first post.

I'm pretty new to RC and have an AeroScout RTF that I'm learning to fly with.

I would like to be able to fly electric sailplanes so I will need to get a proper radio to use with them.

Both hobby shops in town are pushing Spektrum, which I gather is a decent radio. However, they seem to be quite expensive compared to OpenTX radios.

Radiomaster has caught my eye and I've read a lot of reviews and watched a lot of videos about the Radiomaster TX16s, but everything that I can find online is one to two years old.

So I have a few questions. Was the initial enthusiasm toward this radio still valid today or were people just getting excited about it because it was new? What do people who have used them for a while think about them now? Is this a radio worth considering?

Neil

Re: Is Radiomaster TX16s worth buying?

Depending on the particular model of TX16 (variety of models) this radio cannot be beat for it's price point. I was a Spektrum users when I first got back into RC's but when I found out the unlimited capability of opentx I did not hesitate to buy the TX16S. The newer TX16 has a built in multi protocol which supports all my old spektrum receivers too.
Radio master comes installed with the open source software, opentx or you can load on a fork of opentx called Edgetx which now supports touch screen on the Tx16 (ips screen model).
There are constant enhancements, and improvements to what can be achieved by these enthusiastic developers and all for free.
However, There is a downside although small depending on your "grey matter" which is the learning of opentx. There are several excellent you-tubers who do tutorials on how to setup your TX16. Check them out first before committing. Hope this will help you.
In particular check out RCVideo reviews tutorials, in my book this guy is an excellent source for any newbie or experienced user.

Newbie to Open TX here and Radiomaster. What I can say is that the basic TX16S with Hall gimbals is a decent transmitter. I find it very quick and easy to set up any basic model 4 channels and under and that also includes setting up Expo, dual and triple rates. If you need to program more than that, I cannot answer, but as posted above, there are many videos out there on how to do pretty much anything you want to do with it.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the response and suggestions. I've watched some OpenTX videos and don't anticipate the learning curve to be too bad.

Hi Chancey,
Thanks for the response. It's good to hear what someone thinks of a product after using it rather than just first impressions after taking it out of the box.

Almost 1/3 of our club’s active flyers are using OpenTX radios, most of them on TX16S radios.

Spectrum and others are generally simple and straightforward, but can be limiting and expensive.
openTX is a super powerful Swiss Army knife and the cost of entry is cheap, but like most knives, can cut you if you don’t pay attention. Configuration isn’t as simple as “turn on V tail mix”, but once you get your head wrapped around it, it’s not hard, and as mentioned, it can be super powerful and can do just about anything.

have one of these a dx9 and old futaba 8u radios. my choice futaba, then the dx9, then open tx. the futaba is the best quality hardest of them all to do something complicated with but by far the best peeling chrome and all. radio master is cheap it shows. dx9 not cheap but its easier to program and shouldnt be an issue if an.incident occurs.
