Ouch!!

I wondered what caused this. the video comment says the pilot stalled it, but when I watched it it looked like lack of power.

Either way, a terrible loss on a maiden

Re: Giant mustang wiped out on maiden

Looks like he turned to sharp and stalled it. If he used any elevator he just made the stall worse. Looks like it had enough power. I've flown some planes that wanted to roll with to much elevator throws. Cheers Floyd

Re: Giant mustang wiped out on maiden

With no data like max rpm (power) , prop pitch , AU weight it’s hard to break down power or lack of it, reason.
Other’s could be , if a scratch or kit built ; were the wings built straight ? I have always maintained one of the best tools in a builders toolbox is the Robart incidence meter to measure the tip incidence to make sure they match. Can also be used on ARF’s .

The TO airspeed appeared to be ok on takeoff but noticed a little flap deployed and IF not setup even could have contributed to roll. I never use flap for takeoffs unless lots of available power. Looked like too much opposite aileron for compensation , exasperated the roll but with the nose drop , more airspeeds and neutral aileron put the aircraft into a dive but short on altitude. Climb out was also a little steep so if short on power
That could cause a reduction in airspeed pretty quick.
My initial take on it in any case.

looks like the engine died at the exit of the turn.

Re: Giant mustang wiped out on maiden

Few factors in play here:
1) Windy day, with gusts
2) Turned into direction of torque
3) Turned to go downwind at too sharp an angle (zero airspeed)
4) Pulled up elevator, when he should have neutralized, then level the wings, then add up gradually.
5) Not enough altitude to execute the turn.

Re: Giant mustang wiped out on maiden

Maybe the servo cable/sat RXs were loose and disconnected or the power to the RX disconnected.

I lost my sat RX sats and sk720 while inverted
I had just replaced a frame on my trex 550 and put everything back meticulously, except for one of my RX sats, I planned to Velcro it down at the field.

When I got to the field I completely forgot the sat was not securely attached and I lifted off, checked all controls and they worked great started to fly circuits, then hit idle up and flipped it upside down to hover inverted and I could see the sat fly into the main blade which then pulled the flight controller off without power I could only watch the heli just slowly start to drop, right down on the main blades.

Re: Giant mustang wiped out on maiden

I think the dreaded downwind turn got it.

Re: Giant mustang wiped out on maiden

I kind of agree. Looks like flaps came off and the turn was downwind with ground speed seeming to stay about the same, which would of course mean much lower airspeed in that wind.

Hi Gerard
Are you in the right form topic as this was a crash of a P51 aircraft ?
Thanks.
