Unknown pattern plane

I am reaching out to seasoned, experienced pattern fliers, or anyone who might recognize this pattern plane.

I acquired a fiberglass fuselage and a set of foam cut wings. I am (at least) the third owner. The first owner passed away and his wife gave this plane to a colleague who has given it to me. I am seeking any information or suggestions. I really think someone out there will recognize this plane and be able to shed some light on this mystery.

The original owner was an avid pattern flyer in the 80's and into the 90's. I expect this was a popular / desirable plane during that time. He was not afraid to buy high end RC gear.

It looks like this project is a year or two away from the building stage as I don't know what it is. I have been looking around and I wonder if it is a Summit?

The canopy is missing. "Challenger" is written on the foam but I can't find any pictures online that resembles this description as a pattern plane. It is possible the wing cores I have aren't intended for this plane as well.

Thanks for helping,

Brandon

Re: Unknown pattern plane

Looks like a Saturn designed by Ivan Kristensen but I'm an IMAC guy so could be wrong. LOL!

Jim your eyes are failing you man, 100% not a Saturn but it is one of Ivan's designs you are correct there.
It is a Summit 3.

Re: Unknown pattern plane

hi Brandon et al,

I'm not an "experienced, seasoned pattern flier" but I am an "anybody" who has a used/built Summit III (smiley).

The layout/shape of fuselage looks like the model I have but some of your measurements are a bit longer than the ones I just took off my plane.

My measurements:
:individual wing panel: 30" long; root chord: 15 & 3/16"; tip chord: 8 & 1/2"
:fuselage length, measured from rear of spinner to rudder hinge line, under the stab: 54 & 1/4"
:top of canopy cavity, measured from front fuselage lip to rear fuselage lip, with the canopy removed: 12"

Here is a good rcgroups thread on the Summit III: pictures of components, posts 5, 6, and 12 have links to reduced size plans, building instructions and some full size fuselage former templates:

Re: Unknown pattern plane

Michael,

This is great! Thanks. I have begun my collecting of information. I am finishing a Nova Pattern plane this winter (designed and built by a local pattern enthusiast). As well as resurrecting an old Byron's Original F-16.

Next winter is a Citation which is partially built.

The Summit is in line for Winter of 2023.

Re: Unknown pattern plane

My current pattern project. This is a Nova (several were built and designed by two guys from Nova Scotia). Originally glow, I'm electrifying it.
