OK so seeing as I have finished my 1/3 Stearman I might as well get a start on my 113" super chipmunk . I will be using the Valach 120 boxer twin for power .. was not planing on starting the kit until this fall but seeing as it won't stop snowing up here I might as well make use of my time . This is one massive box of wood that builds a massive Chipmunk . The kit was cut by National Balsa and while the wood looks very good I don't think they know what a lightening hole is, all the parts are just big slabs . First thing is to lay out the sides and mark out the lightening holes and cut them out with the router . The sides are 3 layers thick for 1/2 the length of the plane so this alone will save a ton of weight ..

Re: Hostetler 30% Chipmunk

Good for you taking the time to do lighting holes. Lighter flies better. I will be watching this thread with interest.

yeah thanks Mike, normally I would do X bracing when cutting out the holes but this plane also has stringers and 1/8 sheeting, once build I would hardly think it even needs 1/2 the inside structure . The chipmunk also has a very long tail moment so I'll have to be careful with the tail weight and remove every ounce I can rear of CG ... cheers

Re: Hostetler 30% Chipmunk

Installing the servos in the aft section is always a good idea. The added benefit of having them in the rear out weighs the weight gain. I built a Hosteler Decathlon and installed the elevator servos in the aft end and the rudder servo on pull-pull was installed in the cabin. DA100 for power and had to add weight in the front to balance but not much.
