Heh... Good questions.

I use all of the above..LOL

For all my nitros, I just use NiMh Batteries. Eneloops are my favourite

For my small electrics, I use the ESC's built in BEC

For my larger electrics, I use separate BEC's in the 5A range.

Re: rx batt or optiguard or bec

For my 700 and larger helis I have used Western Robotics (Canadian company). The last WR units I have been using are there Super BEC Pro mini which is rated at 16 amps continuous and 22 amp peaks and for up to 18s with no change in ratings. I have used WR becs with zero issues for around 9 years now . I have been using the Spartan mini power pbus with this bec to take some load off the FBL bus and help with tidying up the wiring. Both top notch products in my books. I would not play with a bec under 10 amps continuous on a 700 size machine with good servos in it.

Re: rx batt or optiguard or bec

It's also really simple to use any battery as a back up to the BEC. All you need is a pair of appropriate diodes and of course the battery.

Re: rx batt or optiguard or bec

To just " use any battery" could run into a pretty broad range of current draw scenarios . Without knowing just what the specs are of the battery could put your system in jeopardy if it was called on for a serge of current and not be able to supply it.
Same with BEC circuits on ESC's as many are limited to 3 amp where the better ones are usually 5 amps. If you need more then higher output BECs are available but watch how they list it as some may list as peak and others as continuous.

As Dennis says , Western Robotics make good stuff as does Castle Creations.

Re: rx batt or optiguard or bec

thanks for the inputs.
I am using cc bec pro for my large scale as it came with it.
now im building a 550. I have a hw 120 v4. not sure if it's enough.
it has adjustable voltage up to 8v w/ 10Acont/25Apeak BEC.
my old century NX runs on LiFe 6.6v.
then I've read about back-up guards
(scorpion and optiguard). though I cant fly any hard.
I have a cc BEC 10amp peak(don't know the continuous rate) that I can use w/ a LiFe6.6v. just don't like adding another battery on board. but i can only care less
about weight if i need it.
so, would my HW esc enough? i know brown-out is the issue to deal.
or should i put on an extra batts/back-up guard as an insurance?
I've seen pulse back-up batt in rotorquest, which is not that expensive.
again, THANK YOU All!

Ernest

Re: rx batt or optiguard or bec

on my 700 i run a disable the bec from the hobbywing 160 and run a Rx pack instead and also have the optipower backup guard

Re: rx batt or optiguard or bec

For a 550 size helicopter, 10A constant and 25A peak from the HW ESC should be more than enough to handle it. There are always exceptions and I have one of them. The stand alone 10A BEC from CC can work but it must be with the right servos, etc., or there will be brownouts. I have two Heli-Babys, one has the 10A CC BEC and the other had to have more so it has the BEC Pro. When I went to switch the BEC in the heli with the BEC Pro out to the CC 10A BEC, the gyro would reset a couple of times while initializing. It had the PRO on it before and I thought it was overkill. Apparently not. I tried higher voltages on it as well but no change so either the CC BEC was defective or there was an event that overwhelmed the BEC. I run those two helicopters off of the main battery pack as there is precious little room for an additional battery and neither of the ESCs had built-in BECs. I have a Logo sized to a 550 that has been running since day one with a Western Robotics 5A BEC and it has been flawless. Those are not an inexpensive way to go but they are bulletproof. This particular unit has been in a helicopter since 2007/8 and it is still going. Set it and forget it. Hope this helps.

Don

If running a CC Bec Pro the only limitation would be the input battery supply. If using A123 systems 2S battery direct to the receiver ,only limitation is wiring size from battery to receiver. The CC 10 amp bec needs airflow for 10 amp I believe but may be borderline. When using a quality BEC there should be no browouts uts as it should hold the voltage at the set level up the the input voltage.

Re: rx batt or optiguard or bec

i may start w/ the hw bec and add an optiguard/ sort of backup guard.
i like that strobe light in it. hehe
as it’s kinda of a fad this days.
and wish for the best of luck. as i said, i cant fly any hard.
on my cc bec pro in my big scale, i do ran a separate batt for weight purpose
to add in cg correction togther w/ some wheel square weights, w/c were free from kaltire.
THANK YOU ALL FOR THE INPUTS!!
