Close all flying facilities, urges Zone G (Ottawa Valley) director

Good morning folks. Got this email yesterday:
Hello Fellow Modelers:

As you are all very likely aware by now, Governments at the Federal and Provincial levels have and will continue to be introducing unprecedented levels of social restriction as we, collectively, do our part to lessen the effects of the current Global viral pandemic.

Acknowledging this unfortunate but critically important turn of events, I have communicated with my extended Leadership team within our Zone to strongly urge them to close all flying facilities, both indoor and outdoor, indefinitely and with immediate effect. I have also strongly recommended that all currently planned and MAAC sanctioned flying events be cancelled or postponed until further notice.

As Clubs are separate and self-governng entities within the MAAC umbrella, you should expect specific direction from the Leadership team of the Club(s) which you are a member of in the very near future. If in doubt, please follow our Prime Minister's direction and "just stay home".

I sincerely hope that each of you, and your families, are and shall remain healthy,

Geoff
Having already wondered if it would come to this, I had thought we could practice social distancing at the field. Perhaps not.

Re: Close all flying facilities, urges Zone G (Ottawa Valley) director

I agree with closing the indoor, but I don't understand why it's necessary to close the outdoor if they are attended by few people if any.

I'm sure it will become a hazard if it's a crowd, but at my flying field especially on weekdays there's rarely two or more persons at any given time. There's enough space at our field to have two people stand at opposite ends of the field and fly and have at least a 30 yards between them. So why close the field?

As the lockdown progresses and more and more people become stir-crazy, what is the harm if one person goes to the field and flies by themselves?

Re: Close all flying facilities, urges Zone G (Ottawa Valley) director

Apparently MAAC reps we elect think they run the country???

Being socially distanced is the law so who the ( insert any foul word you desire ) is thinking they need to tell us what to do. If your exec or MAAC official thinks its appropriate to shut down flying it's time to eject and start over with someone that represents your fellow pilots.

If you are uncomfortable being socially distanced stay home. If the government invokes martial law your club or MAAC or club official still has no say in the law.

Out standing in a field ( very likely alone ) isn't illegal. Doing so beyond the acceptable crowding level is. This obviously has absolutely no thought of why it is a very bad dictatorial idea and should be rescinded.

The government needs to tell the people who don’t listen or think it won’t happen to me. Cancelling MAAC events maybe premature at this point but will likely happen as most Health professionals are predicting this will go on for months. It would be a good idea for MAAC clubs to limit the number of people at there flying field as per local social distancing guidelines. Giving priority to weekends for the members of clubs who work during the week.

Although we have cancelled a swap meet, and a upcoming brunch, we currently have NO plans to close the field.
If 10 people showed up at the field on any given day, together, we would call it a fun fly or miracle.

I belong to Stetson Flyers in Ottawa. Our club executive has closed the field until further notice.

I find it funny that for the most part, everyone can still go to work, and keep the economy rolling, but shut down a flying field?
I'm forced to come into contact with 30 different people a day, but wont be aloud to stand in an open field?

Im sorry. But you would be the one person I would not want to see at the field.

Keep in mind folks that Covid attacks the elderly. 75% of our pilots are elderly.
Would YOU be willing to say "its business as usual, everyone keep flying" How would you feel when multiple members of your club come down with Covid. How often do you hold someone else's transmitter or grab the tail of their plane to wheel it on/off the field. How close are people huddled together under a sun shelter. Does your field have a lock? How many people will handle that lock throughout the day. Covid can live up to 72hrs on metal.

Stop thinking about yourselfs! and think about those you may infect or be infected by.

Just things to consider.
