Re: "old time" radio set up..

Andrew, I absolutely LOVE this idea! Two reasons, first off, the radio looks more the part (Ok, not quite as these planes were free flight) and secondly, the modern radios are just fragile junk!

I bought a brand new 2.4 radio, took it out of the box and set it upright on the table. It was top heavy, tipped over and there was plastic bits everywhere! Never even got to set it up in the plane let alone fly it!

I have old aluminum case radios that have been around since Christ was a cowboy, used until the paint wore off the case and not one little bitty piece broken anywhere!

Need to know how this conversation is done... desperately!

There is a 2.4 conversion Facebook group Im a member of. I didnt do it myself but lots of info there.

One of the main reasons I like my old Jr 12xs are that they feel great. And the 28x I bought recently as well. Nothing cheap about them.

Re: "old time" radio set up..

Last time I was at Toledo, 3 years ago, i think, there was a booth there and they were selling Olde School Radios converted to 2.4.

They found a stash of Old but brand new Metal Tx Cases from EK Logictrol, MRC, Royal and even Kraft and outfitted them with modern Gimbals, 2.4GHz RF Decks. They had a flip down panel and you had Reversing, End Point Adjustment and some other stuff like the older Futaba SG8's. So you had the best of both worlds, Older looking metal TX case that looked Retro with modern electronics in it.

My first radio in 1972 was an ORBIT Competition Series 7ch and it was metal. Next I built a Heathkit 8ch, metal again. then had to go to plastic when most of the industry switched function for fashion. That's why when Jeti came out and it was metal I switched and haven't looked back.

Re: "old time" radio set up..

Hey Guys
Just a note on the 2.4 conversion stuff.
I've been running 2 of my multiplex transmitters with the Corona TX diy modules and have had zero issues with them. In fact they seem a bit quicker than the 72 mhz connection was.
Highly recommended from here.

Chiming in on the audio side I have always been a Maxell tape guy and still use my Aiwa AD F800 deck on my mid 70's totl Yamaha setup.
Still have 2 nos 5 packs of XL2S 100 tapes and they make very good copies.
And yes Still have my records and a few very good tables!

All the best
Hugh

4 or 5 bucks on eBay. My metal tape is now bid at $21.50 with 3 days left. Bizarrre.

Way back when, I gave a whole bunch of tapes to the CNIB - blind institute for their audio book program. You could do that. Shame to trash it.

<hijack off - sorry!>
