There is a consideration with helis that is not as applicable with airplanes. Some brands make the same helis for electric power and for nitro power. The nitro version will always be substantially lighter. If you like shooting a number of various kinds of autorotations at the later part of your flight you will find there to be a big difference. A 600 size nitro, compared to its’ 12 cell powered electric brother, can be as much as 2 pounds lighter at that point in the flight. That can come out to being a 20% or so difference, which will make a big difference in how they auto.

There are many advantages to going electric, but I think your observation is correct. Nitro does have the edge in terms of weight. While I still fly both, my preference is for electric helis just for the sake of convenience.

A very interesting discussion!

I never did consider the extra weight that electric helis are carrying. I googled some numbers out of curiosity.

Align 600E - 3.7kg
Align 600N(dry) -3.2kg (13.5% less)
Align 600N(wet) - 3.53kg (4.5% less)
Align 550E/600 stretch - 3.3 kg.
Kraken 580 12s 3.3 kg (AccuRC)
Kraken 580 6s 2.87 kg (AccuRC)
Kraken 580 Nitro (dry) 3.1 kg.

The numbers are pretty close...but yes, electrics are generally heavier, especially at the end of the flight. One could argue that there is little meaningful difference in some of the newer models.

I drive an battery electric vehicle and am very fascinated how similar the BEV car vs ICE car is to the glow vs electric debates. The arguments are almost the same. Electric cleaner, more reliable, easier, cheaper to run, quieter, more powerful, instant torque. Gas/Nitro better range (length of flight), lighter, what I am accustomed to, less up front cost, more convenient (fill and go). I would not be surprised if the electric car adoption follows a similar pattern to the electric RC adoption. 20 years ago when electric planes first arrived not a lot of people were interested. Fast forward to today and over half of the RC population is electric. History just might repeat itself.

Try putting solar on your home like I did and start listening to the arguments. I should add that I work for the power company and even some coworkers argue against it.
