Hobby Topgun Mig 15 maiden flights!
The rain and fog and wind took a rest today and allowed us to maiden the BIG MIG! What a docile machine. Flies off the runway in about 50' with no wind. Flies like it's on rails and lands like a trainer. I was concerned about low thrust readings done before the flight but flew it anyway. 2 minutes into the third flight at about 1/2 throttle the motor suddenly stopped. I was in a good position for a deadstick and about 6' above the runway lost all control. The aircraft was trailing black smoke out of the tailpipe when the right wing tip caught the grass and it came to rest after bending the noise gear strut. I quickly unplugged the battery not knowing what had burnt. Turns out the 85A ESC totally fried partially melting the foam where it was mounted. All leads were melted off (batter/motor and RX), what a stink.
All in all it was a fun day with some excitement thrown in which is typical for EDF's. This ESC was trying to tell me something earlier when it seemed to run hot and with less watts from a known fan/motor... Can't wait for the next HK shipment to arrive to fly it again with full power. Freewing 90mm fan with Prodesign PD36/1900-50EDF 1900kv motor 85A Cyclone power ESC (perhaps 100A is better suited to this motor) Air retracts Hobby topgun alloy wheels and struts Flaps Wheel brakes 9 HXT900 servos Corona 72mhz 8CH fully synthesized RX Cheers PS Thanks BOB B. for selling it!

Yeah Eric, were you running 6S 4000 ? You should try that Turnigy 100 esc ...seems ok.

6S 45-90C nano-tech 5000mah battery. I don't normally pull more than 75A with this motor/fan and I've used the same type ESC in other planes without a hitch.
Pretty sure this ESC was just a dud. I did order the Turnigy DLUX 100A to try as the price is right.... Cheers

They do need some work to make reliable. The only drawback of this set is the downlock isn't positive. The lock travel must be opened up towards the air cylinder 1mm and the cylinder spaced out with a thick washer to move the lock pin/bar to a better position. At $5 a retract they are a bargain. Cheers

Re: Hobby Topgun Mig 15 maiden flights!
Glad you had success Eric. Never a doubt in my mind. Maybe one day I'll give you a call and get down to your field and chase that Mig around with a Canadian Sabre. I figured it would not be a rocket, but, those large wings apparantly handle the load really well.
Best Regards. |

Re: Hobby Topgun Mig 15 maiden flights!
Hi Bob!
you can come fly here anytime! I really want the Mig to fly with a Sabre to get some video. I'll be out again today with the L39 and F86. A speed demon it is not, but it will be close to Sabre speed. The ESC was purchased through RCCastle and after I emailed them yesterday, they have already shipped out a free replacement! Wow, great service! Raymond even sent a free UBEC in case I don't trust the SBEC. Cheers

Re: Hobby Topgun Mig 15 maiden flights!
I'm away for the weekend, but, I'll send you a PM when we get back on Monday. Maybe we can arrange a time next week or the following week. I'm retired as you know and most days are mine with little or no time constraints.

Re: Hobby Topgun Mig 15 maiden flights!
Changed the ESC after robbing it from F18. It pulled more watts (settled down to about 1700) and we made half a dozen flights. All was well until black smoke appeared just before my son's second flight on the Mig! The first ESC definitely had issues prior to burning up but the second was a surprise!
2 choices now, either run the lower Kv freewing motor in the replacement ESC or keep the more powerful 1900Kv and run the HK Turnigy DLUX 100A. Will likely go with plan B for this big bird needs power! We flew the F86 many flights today with it's Freewing motor and it was fast in comparison. Cheers
