Scratch built CJ5 Jeep

I've been building some crawlers over the past few years and been having lots of fun with it , One truck I would like to build is a CJ 5 Jeep but you just can't find one . I decided I was not going to let that stop me so I'm building one from scratch . I made the plugs from wood and have decided to vacuum form the parts . Trying to keep it as scale as possible by making all the hinging functional . This is what I have so far . the first few pictures are the vacuum formed parts and that later ones are the plugs assembled to look like a jeep .

Re: Scratch built CJ5 Jeep

Wheel base is the same as my RC4wd Pathfinder 2 . I don't remember exactly off hand but I think it's 11 3/4 " ??. I will be kit bashing one of the tamiya bruiser knock offs for the frame( HG P407 Toyato LOL) . You can get the whole kit for $250 , it's exactly the same as the bruiser with all metal construction and it's a leaf spring chassis 3 speed transmission . , the Tamiya version is $1100 ,would not want to kit bash that one LOL ..

Re: Scratch built CJ5 Jeep

started a little work on the dash yesterday .also did the heater vent panel . the dash panel comes off when you remove the 2 windshield fold down screws, the cavity behind the panel is where I will install the 6000mah lion battery. I think it needs a bit bigger steering wheel .

Re: Scratch built CJ5 Jeep

made the roll bar out of 5/16" brake line , soldered together with mounting flanges welded on the ends and mounted to the floor just like the real thing . It will join to a cross member that attaches to the frame ,so it will be quite functional . I am sure just like the real jeep I should be dropping the windshield down when crawling so it does not get destroyed in a roll over

Re: Scratch built CJ5 Jeep

Little more progress, made up the wheel flairs , also cast some resin tail lights and fitted them with LED lights , not sure what to do with the tail gate, I may just leave it wood and pint it because vacuum forming one would require it be filled with wood anyway to mount all the hinges and latches .. also made some seats and covered them in leather .
