Got some new stuff

Picked up a complete Trex 500 an HK 450 and a 450 Bell fuse for $100. Near as I can tell the guy just wants to unload his toys and I happened to be on the receiving end. I fly like an old lady so no fast moves of any sort for me. My question is what is a good size battery for me to get for the 500? The ESC is 85a 2 to 6 cell so for turtle like flyers like myself what would be a good battery? I'll take some pictures tomorrow.

Re: Got some new stuff

You got a great deal buddy!!!!

The Trex 500 flies best with a 6S 4000. You can go with 3000 but less flight time, not to mention amp draw over/C means it will get warm faster.
Anything over 4000 is to bulky and you will have a hard time making it fit.

Re: Got some new stuff

Thanks Max. I'm having trouble setting up the Turnigy 85a 2-6 cell ESC though. I put the stick to full throttle, turn on the switch listen for the two beeps then put it to idle but no confirming beeps. I wonder if I was to leave it switched on at the bec and then plugged in the battery if that would help?

Re: Got some new stuff

I got the ESC working by doing things in a different order. The ESC is 2-6 cells so would five cells be easier on the ESC?

Re: Got some new stuff

Not necessarily. Depending on motor Kv and load you can actually require more current for the same power.

What did you need to get the ESC started? Asking as I have their 100A unit going into a T600 build.

I know with Futaba at least the throttle channel needs to be reversed.

Re: Got some new stuff

I ordered some 40c 6 cell 2650 batteries from Rotorquest. With the ESC I had the batteries plugged in with the switch off. I would put it to full throttle then turn on the switch, it would beep twice so I put it to no throttle but no beep. What worked was leave the switch on and plug in the batteries then it would program properly.

Re: Got some new stuff

So I started taking a close look at the 500 to discover this heli has never been flown. He had an EXI aftermarket main rotor installed, Align carbon fibre frame and tail tube along with aluminum tail rotor assembly. The reason I say it has never been flown is because of the amount of Loctite used. There was a major amount drag and sticking of the tail pitch assembly, there would have been a crash the first time out. Now I'm busy checking and reassembling the moving parts.
I've been pulling wrenches for the last 45 years so I'll give you a little advice about Locktite.
Number one: With heli's use blue Loctite not red or green.
Number two: Use very little, about the size of the head of a pin for most bolts three mm and lower.
Number three: This is the most important, when applying Loctite put it in the thread bore not the bolt or screw. Make sure you wipe off any excess outside of the bore. Never put Loctite on the screw or bolt threads because it will push Loctite into bearings and other places you don't want it to go.
Just keep in mind the Loctite that is actually doing the work is a thin film not much volume to it.

Re: Got some new stuff

A trex 500 is 425 main baldes, a 4000mah 6s is too heavy. Id go with a quality 3300mah

Re: Got some new stuff

The batteries are 2600mah 6s That's about all the flight time I need. I don't want to get the max size because I don't want to go too heavy.
