Re: Kyosho Concepts...

Today I was flying the Concept 30 SR (which I bought in poor condition of this site last year, and rebuilt)

With an OS .37 SZ engine (a beast!) and align 520 mm blades.

Set up pretty well... itís very satisfying to see these birds airborne again.

edit: i give up. tried to correct the photo a dozen times. Ugh.

Re: Kyosho Concepts...

So, over the past year of accumulating parts and used machines - I wanted to build up a Concept 30SX to fly, and I started on it this week.

I rebuilt an older ABN OS .32SX (that had a good rod, crank, bearings, carb etc just wore out piston) with a new sleeve, ringed piston and ring. Broke it in on the test stand and set up the needles. This should be a drop in ready to run engine.

The SX has a black tailboom, and the sleeker style canopy (also used on the SR) but with dual colour blue decals. I managed to improvise with some close PSA vinyl I had on hand. Trying to match this cover shot from a book I bought 30 years ago. And that had me lusting for an SX ever since.

I am changing a few things - since Ill be using weighted carbon blades (some old NHP 500mm's) I am using an SR head and grips, with the SR metal inner mixing arms. Bearings everywhere as was on the SX and its options. Metal balls everywhere except the tail rotor grips.

Im using Futaba 9255's on cyclic and collective, Futaba 9254 TR with a 401 gyro. Hitec 5625 on throttle. 2 cell lipo through a smart fly regulator to feed 5V to the servos (rated for 4.8 only).

Love working on these things so much... very fun, relaxing.

Re: Kyosho Concepts...

This whole thread has been about resurrecting Concept 30 helis. WHen I went to my first 60 size Right at the end of my last year of college in 95'), I bought a Shluter Magic, as I got a good deal on it from Flite Craft in Kitchener, as they were switching to selling Kalt machines. Plus, the Concept 60 was very expensive - and I had to order it from the USA. I recall our dollar being very weak in the mid 90's.

But, I have been keeping my eye out for a decent machine... and so far everything has been too far away, or too far gone, etc.

Yesterday on a vintage heli page, I saw a fellow from Thunder Bay put up a Concept 60 SR, complete RTF minus receiver.... and only asking $300 Cad. SOLD! I think I didnt even ask too much about it before I sent the cash. Its in the mail and expected mid week coming up.

Damn, when it rains, it pours!

Re: Kyosho Concepts...

A bit o’ flying (using the term loosely ) with my rebuilt SR.

It’s very smooth. The OS .37 (only one I ever had) runs great.

Also got the decals on the SX. Just have to install the radio gear now and pushrods etc.

Re: Kyosho Concepts...

I got the SX completely done - radio gear installed, and set up in the 12X. I think the 2200 mAh Lipo and SmartFly reg will work very well. Fore/Aft balance is spot on. AFter 29 years of wanting a Concept 30SX I have one!

And, the NIB SX kit I purchased from Japan is in Canada today, and should be in my hands soon...

My next rebuild will be the used SX/SR hybrid I bought from a fellow in England last year, that was in an Interceptor fuselage. Another dream I had way back that was out of my price range. (see post #55 - It arrived to me on June 17, 2020 - only 4 days past a year!)

I tend to work on things in sequence. I was busy with the control line stuff the past several weeks and now Im back into the helis so Ill try and finish up what I had planned to last winter. I really only have the Interceptor to do and that will be it for a while.

Re: Kyosho Concepts...

Today was awesome! After many years of wanting to get an SX flying... I did it!

I tested it out, fine tuned the engine and tracking. Sweet. I still cant believe it.

Next up for test flying is the 32VR I bought new last year and built. Its ready to go. And I will start rebuilding the Interceptor as well.

And the 60 SR arrived today! WHat excitement...

Tried to recreate the cover photo of the book I have been reading the past 28 or 29 years.
