Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Well guys, I am still recovering from my cancer scare. Still my wife had two cancer issues plus a broken ankle, I guess it was my turn. So had 25 radiation treatments to top off the surgery and I have that big vertical scar on my chest, just ruins that California tan.

So, now I'm back at it, cleaned out the workshop and thinned out the model projects. Working on the left wing plug. There are some dips in the surfaces and the wing root needed to be trued up. God bless bondo is all I can say. Figure I'll have it ready for adding the details by this evening.

The long sanding block has the anhedral angle built into it, so both wings will match up to the fuselage perfectly.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

As much as I enjoy the creation of this Avro Arrow, health first! Hopefully some good health years ahead (many of them).

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

I saw that article this morning Dave and it looks like an original. Funny thing though, many years ago, while collecting data for this project, I was able to get my hands on a copy of that book of drawings and photocopied the whole thing for my references. Unfortunately, not any real scale drawings, mostly exploded views, lots of views on the different jigs, etc.

So, this morning, got to work on the master plug for the left wing, specifically, the dog tooth and wing separation fairing. The base of the fairing is 1/32" plywood, 3/4" wide. It's epoxied in place. Then the forward edge is nearly flush sanded, fairing it into the dog tooth channel. Then the channel and plywood is smoothed over with good old bondo. Just need to let it cure so it'll sand smoothly without gumming up on the sander.

To facilitate sanding and shaping, I took one of my DuraGrit FS9 flat sanders which are 1.5" wide and cut it in half length wise so I had two sanders, 3/4" wide. Now, it's very easy to get into the channel to sand the surface accurately. I even beveled the back surface on one side so I can get into the corner that is over 45 degrees, works great.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Can you explain what the purpose of the Dog tooth was?

On the real plane, as it approached supersonic, the airflow went around the wing instead of over it. The dog tooth kept airflow over the wing.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

The master wing plug is coming along pretty good, this afternoon, made and attached the navigation light form, mapped out the panel lines that I wish to make and started applying the panel line masking tape. The width of the tape I'm using is 0.75 mm, quite fine. I purchase this tape from Jammydog out of Britain. It's very good quality and fairly inexpensive.

Looks like I'll be making a trip to Composites Canada on Monday or Tuesday to pick up the Duratec primer, 5 gallons of polyester resin, etc.
