Gary, I like the idea of the steel pin sliding inside the brass tubing , appears that away . Other consideration would be to move that out a bit further to the trailing edge ? Any comments on that ?

I believe that years ago , on the Corsair kits, they used 1/8th or less ply sliding inside a slotted outer rib on the next flap portion to make it work but there was room as a full thickness of flap was used not split type.

Good idea with split though. So then the cf rod is for flap stiffness ; right?

Re: Hawker Hurricane split flaps hinge axis

I used C/F rod to slide inside the brass tube so no RF. The hollow C/F tube was to make the flaps rigid enough to prevent flexing and to transfer torque along their length.

You could move it closer to the trailing edge, but I found no fault with where it was. Worked all the way down to 40 degrees.

Yah , I remember years ago my Kraft on 72 MHz used to go nuts with metal on metal but don’t remember if there was any issue with ferrus on non- ferrus ? Don’t think there is any issue with 2.4 as those are digital signals , no ?

I also used C/F as it stuck better with CA. Steel required sanding to roughen and then degrease to ensure a good bond.

It was also lighter.

Re: Hawker Hurricane split flaps hinge axis

You can use the ply disc only if it's just one angle , Hurricane flaps have to angles up and also V froward , this will cause the ply disc to have to bend not just slide in and out .the pin might work if the socket it slides into is short like a servo grommet spacer so the pin can flex in the hole as it goes through the travel . I would try your setup on some scrap wood before building your plane around it .. cheers

Re: Hawker Hurricane split flaps hinge axis

My pin and tube were not flat, but mounted with both a horizontal and vertical component so that the movement was linear as the two flaps at different angles extended and retracted. This is why it was best to rig up a simulated setup to test the correct angle. Did it by eye so no documentation to tell you what worked.

Re: Hawker Hurricane split flaps hinge axis

I 've solved the split flap hinging dilemma with thanks to various suggestions from members of RC Canada, particularly the idea from Bill (sliding tab on the real Hurricane. Many thanks to all.
The result is two separate flap sections on their respective hinges. They will be joined with a loose fitting 1/16" X 1/2" wide aircraft plywood strip that is captured under the outer two 1/8" aircraft plywood flap ribs. The photo shows a balsa strip as a demonstration only. The servo arm will attach to the larger flap while the short section goes along for the ride.
