The Saito twin that never was

Saito made a .60 twin that was for some reason an anomaly in that it has a wedge design head. It ran very well but not really exceptional in the power department like we are used to with the Saito hemi headed engines.

I have often wondered why they didn't make a twin based on the .30S cylinders or even the .30 open rocker cylinders. All the other Saito twins had the hemi design heads. They did a 3 cylinder radial with the .30S parts.

It would be fun to do a one off with a bar stock crankcase but the .30S is getting a bit hard to find now and parts are no longer available it seems.

The link you provided shows a single cylinder, I believe the post is referring to a twin which means two cylinder.

Re: The Saito twin that never was

I think Merv was referring to making a twin from 2 singles.

Re: The Saito twin that never was

The 60 twin the OP speaks of was sort of a model Continental and was the predecessor to the 90 TS. Used 90 TS's are quite pricey if you can find one. The 60 and the 90 TS were even firing smooth runners.

A 60 made with two 30 cylinders would be a real jewel whether odd or even firing.

Re: The Saito twin that never was

I had a SAITO .60 twin. It produced one power stroke each revolution. It turned a 12X6 prop a little over 9,000 RPM. It flew my 1910 Monoplane with a 80" W/S vey well. I had to dive it to do inside loops and cuban eights. I did an outside loop from level flight.

Re: The Saito twin that never was

Is Horizon seriously bringing the .30 back on the market?

Wow! I need to check that out!

Yes I was referring to a twin made with the Saito hemi designed cylinder. The problem for the amateur machinist is there are no left cylinders and making one would not be that easy.

Yes I have a Saito 60 twin and have run it quite a bit. Not exactly outstanding for HP like the hemi Saitos are but it is very smooth and will power a scale model designed for a 40 to 45 2 stroke. A 56 single beats it hands down though.

Yes the 30 is for sale again at a price that leads one to believe Tower thinks it's an OS.
