Mike Patey - Great Interview

I'm wondering how many people know of Mike Patey? Maybe one of his creations "Drako"?

Well he is possibly the most motivating aircraft engineer I've ever seen, he's a hands on guy that builds and modifies his own airplanes to perform the way he wants them to perform. The stuff the guy does is amazing, he's got his start in Aviation from RC, check out this video:

He starts talking about his RC fun at 3:30 ish in the link below.

https://youtu.be/EDhvwIKo2PY

Planes he's built:
A high speed turboprop
A Cub
Scrappy a Cub with 750HP and all CF skin (there are a whole series of videos that take that plane from Framing all the way to skinning.
Drako - A heavily modified Wilga with a Turbine engine and a variable pitch prop (This thing WAS amazing)

RC Leads to things like this, for some people.

Hi Rick,

I updated the link, but it's the same one that pipercub17 posted.

The stuff he builds are amazing.

One of my favorite Youtubers. Always look forward to a new video. It was nice to see his honesty about the crash of Draco. He has partnered with Horizon Hobby for a RC version of Draco.

Re: Mike Patey - Great Interview

I cringed when I saw the footage of Draco getting caught in a gust.. He was totally honest, what a great guy.

His current build will be a beast!! Scrappy is the hotrod of cubs, used lightly, because it's way more than a mere cub. The carbon layup, the attention to detail, enlarging of the rudder, air-foiling the horizontal stabs, oil coolers in the back and that big HONKING motor from his race plane hanging in the nose.

Drool, I can't wait to see that thing take to the skies.

Re: Mike Patey - Great Interview

I watched the build series on Draco when the series first came out. I was amazed by this guy's passion and his family's support. Great build. He is a great dude.

Oh- and when he dinged Draco for what he calls his dumb mistake, I nearly cried.

Re: Mike Patey - Great Interview

Mike Patey is a incredible builder. I really enjoy watching his builds. Draco was a beautiful performing plane but he was still thinking about upgrades to it. Now that he has another wilga (sp) he is going to rebuild it to another Draco with more improvements.

What he is doing with Scrappy is fun to watch. Always waiting for the next youtube.

He also supports us RC pilots against the new US FAA laws.

As he would say, back to work!!
