Re: Detective help needed
Being older than you my time horizon is narrower.
And I love building and flying but dinking around with all of the RC equipment and engine systems in between is more of a chore than I'd like it to be. |

Re: Detective help needed
This is still puzzling me.. three are several hollow log fuselage bipes in the Scientific lineup but all small, think they are Walt Musciano designs:

Re: Detective help needed
Hollow log, I like that!
Walt's Scientific models were semi scale and "blocky" whereas my white whale was sleek and looked like a model of a full scale. They were hugely popular though and that's why there's so many of them I guess. He came out with them when the 1/2A craze hit. None of his offerings, to my knowledge, fit the next class (or two) up - whatever that was called I think that it had a name but I forget. j |

Re: Detective help needed
No they are all 1/2A that I have ever seen. Next size up would be class A, and in sport terms you might see engine ranges like .09-.19, or .15-19, or .15-.23 depending on the vintage. After that into class B and you'll see .19-.35 or engine ranges kinda like that.
You've ruined my life now, because this is an interesting puzzle and I have a hard time letting those go.. especially these days where anything beyond waking up and eating breakfast and working from home is an interesting diversion.

Re: Detective help needed
It's been an interesting challenge for me too.
Each time I poke it along there's a trip down memory lane and a flood of good times comes back. In the end that will be my reward even if I never build the plane. |

Quote:
"It kinda had wings like this...." and .. "It sorta had a fuselage like this..." and.. "I remember the paint scheme looked like this ..". After all, its control line. Just about anything can me made to fly control line. Just building it might trigger even more memories and spark the memories of others that see it in its finished state.

Re: Detective help needed
Yeah I'm headed that way for sure Max.
I just wanted a rough idea of the dimensions so I could source the balsa for the "hollow log". I remember the paint real well, it looked like a grey enamel like garage floor paint but was probably dope. |

Re: Detective help needed
It still leaves the lingering problem of solving the puzzle.
Another way to do log fuselages, depending on exterior profile of course, is to cut out plan view profiles from say 1/2" balsa sheet, with the internal cutouts already there, then stack them into the fuselage blank. Or those little 1/2A Scientifics for example can be copied using a simple built up box with some thicker sheet here and there as needed to allow the profile to be carved out of the exterior.

Re: Detective help needed
Great idea Mike, I may even experiment with foam filler ..................
Balsa log may not be easy to get but the sandwich idea makes sense. |

Re: Detective help needed
In the end only you would know you didn't start with a tree trunk and there is no reason you would not have the same quality of end result.
