Does anyone have a source or know of an alternative for the 1/8 OD copper tubing that is used in nitro fuel tanks..I am tearing apart and rebuilding a couple of old helis that have been sitting for a number of years. The old tubing is splitting..Thanks

Re: Copper tubing

The K&S brass tubing runs on the hard side and might kink if you try and bend it to sharp. If the tubing is to old the rubber stopper might need replacing as well as the tank might be prone to splitting from age. If you have any kind of failure you will most likely loose tank pressure and your motor would quit (deadstick). You might be better off replacing the whole tank with one the same size from Dubro or Sulivan. It comes with a new stopper and soft tubing that is easily bent to suit.

Re: Copper tubing

K&S made copper tubing but why not use brass ? If bending is required and all you have is hard brass , it can be heated with a propane torch to soften, cooled and then bent . Google I gotta it will give you lots of reading .

On the other hand , by the time you buy the tubing and a new plug , you might be better off just buying a new Dubro or Sullivan tank . If it is a specialty sized tank then maybe no choice .

Thanks for all of the replies...I dissasembled and am currently rebuilding an old Century heli that was put into storage a number of years ago.Really enjoying the process but i am running in to a few issues which is no surpise..The tank had fuel left in it and that was pretty messy.

I soaked and cleaned everything up in Isopryl alcohol..The tank itself seals well but the rubber stopper (Maybe i can find a tank with the same size stopper!?) is cracking abit along with the copper tubing.

A new tank is something that will be going on the list i am making as i go through everything.

Re: Copper tubing

You can buy the stoppers at many of the local or online hobby shops . They come for nitro fuel and for gasoline/kerosene so make sore you order the correct one. Many of the stoppers, once used can't be reused as they take a set to the tank outlet and to match up the same position may not be easy .
Also when the stopper and brass tubing are installed do a pressure test by pressurizing the tank and put into water and look for bubbles. Don't need much pressure maybe 5/6 pounds. Surprising how many times we may think the tank seals well but will find bubbles with a bit of pressure. Turbine guys do it all the time or should....LOL

Like Dennis says ; for anything under 32 oz ; hardly worth messing with used tanks unless a specialty size. Over 32 oz the price jumps.

Re: Copper tubing

Why screw around trying to by bits and pieces just buy a tank they come with everything you need and probably not much more than you would pay for the bits and pieces. Any hobby shop should be able to get what you want or mail order from Great Hobbies.

Re: Copper tubing

I have not used any of the stock brass tubing since the 80s once I discovered the air tubing used in the kids aquarium had the same OD.

Every installation or rebuild since then has used this as careful heating allows it to be formed and still remain flexible. Removal of the tank with this setup is painless and repeatable.

NOTE: I have run up to 150 size 4-strokes with no signs of starvation.

Here are a couple of examples I have pics of.
