How do you store your planes?

I'm new to the hobby and ended up going on a buying frenzy. Now my issue is too many planes and not enough storage for them. I can hang them in the garage or the basement, but not sure the best way to do this. I am also open to building a rack if anyone has plans or details about that solution. I have mostly 80-110" wingspan gas planes. Thank you in advance for your input.

Re: How do you store your planes?

Easiest way is to make yourself racks using 3/4 in dia PVC pipes and T fittings. Simply cut the pipes larger than the width of your wing, space them out vertically so you have a few inches of play over the wing to place them in the rack, glue the pipes with PVC glue and install pipe foam insulation over to prevent the pipes from marring the wood or fiberglass. Build 2 identical racks in the shape of a ladder and bolt each rack to the wall studs using large diameter wood screws spacing them so the wings are supported about mid way from each end.

Repeat the same for the fuses increasing the height between each rack bay to fit the fuses in and adding a 3rd row for heavy planes. PVC pipes are really strong, you can even build furniture with those pipes.

Do a google search for PVC RC wing rack, there are many examples of racks for RC planes to inspire yourself from.

Re: How do you store your planes?

I'm lucky and able to hang some from the rafters overhead with heavy string and wood dowels with pipe insulation slid overtop to help prevent damage to the craft. With the helis, formed heavy wire to catch the rotor hub and that too hangs from the hooks inserted into the beams.

Some very light foamies have plywood plates epoxied at the CoG and use small S-hooks at the end of the string.

At one point also used this system consisting of shelf bracketry and long arms that were able to be spaced where required. Each arm had a section of split fuel hose and the pipe insulation to prevent damage and shifting.

Was quite versatile, but only negative was this setup restricted or prevented the installation of any actual shelving for all the rest of the bits and bobs that inevitably collect along the way.

Re: How do you store your planes?

I’m lucky that I have a fairly tall garage. I have a couple of electric 2’x3’ platform lifts that I put medium fuselages on (built a wood frame to double layer them). Large fuses get lifted up on “bicycle pulley lifts” and small planes go on a pegboard on the wall.

I looked at building a PVC wing rack, but ended up buying a couple of “lumber” racks on sale for the same price as all those fittings. The steel rack is strong enough to take giant scale wings. They can either go against the wall, or put two back to back and hang from the ceiling in pairs. Pipe foam for softness.

I use a heavy duty adjustable shelving racks. The heavy duty have the double slots and can handle any size plane.

The advantage is you can continually customize the arrangement to adjust to a changing fleet, along with and integrated shelving system as well.

I use the same hardware for my plane hauling cargo trailer , with some simple mods to keep stuff secure in their racks while bouncing down the Highway. Never had a failure in almost 10 years now.
