The turtle deck is fixed and Iíll take care of the filling and finishing after it is installed. The main task for tonight was to install the wing and stab sleeves. I started with the wing tube sleeve. This didnít take more than a few strokes of sandpaper to open up the holes and then after confirming that the tube was square to the fuselage and centreline, it was epoxied in place. After the wing tube sleeve was in place the stab tube sleeve was fitted and squared up the fuselage centreline. The stab tube was parallel to the wing tube and it was also epoxied in place.

Re: Kam Aero Extra 300KK

I trimmed up the wing and stab tube sleeves as well as the ends of the sleeves in the elevator cores. A few swipes with a sanding bar had the cores fitting perfectly with the fuselage sides. I epoxied the plywood stab roots to the cores. Tomorrow Iíll set the incidence of the stabs.

Re: Kam Aero Extra 300KK

I epoxied the plywood stab roots to the cores along with the leading and trailing edges. The leading edge is 3/8Ē balsa and I modified the suggested balsa trailing edge by installing 1/8Ē spruce for some hanger rash protection. After shaping the leading and trailing edge I set the incidence. This is obviously a critical step so set, measure, check, measure, check again....

Re: Kam Aero Extra 300KK

After setting the incidence I marked and cut out the 1Ē wide strip to make room for the stab trailing edge and elevator leading edge. These were glued on with Titebond and left overnight. Using some paper rolled over a broom handle I make a tube to carry the servo leads to the tail. I gave the paper tube (which was only two layers) a couple of coats of Eze-kote to give it a bit of stiffness without adding any weight. Three small guides were cut from 1/8Ē liteply and the assembly was glued in place.

Re: Kam Aero Extra 300KK

This is something that I have not done before but I think itís a great suggestion from Kam Aero. The area under the tabs that bolt the stabs to the fuselage take a bit of a beating over the many hundreds of flights that this airframe will hopefully complete. I inset 1/8Ē plywood into the balsa fuselage sides that match the outlines of the tabs. This will prevent the dents that would easily form from bolting on the stabs each flying session.

Re: Kam Aero Extra 300KK

I think your tail tube is the same size as the wing tube on my 28% Giles build!!! Looks great and that looks like a great idea to keep the plane looking good!

Re: Kam Aero Extra 300KK

Ya, itís a big plane Ken!

I trimmed and sanded the elevator leading edge and horizontal stab trailing edge flush. I marked out and drilled the hinge paint locations and then I marked out the 12 degree bevel on the ends of the elevator and stabs. The bevels were done with a small plane and finished with a few swipes of a sanding bar with 100 grit. The gaps are nice and tight. I still need to do the final shaping of the stab leading edge along with opening up the servo pockets and installing the plywood pads for the control horns.

So NO 3D flying with those throws!

Surprised you made the Elevators as big as you did or is that why you only need 24 dig deflection?
