Detective help needed
Good day,
About 60 years ago I had a control line model given to me and it was a beautiful flyer as well as a great looker. Here's what I remember about it: - solid balsa fuselage hollowed out (I think that it was a commercial kit?) - biplane with sheet balsa wings sanded to airfoil shape - fuze was rounded and wings in planform were tapered - cabanes and interplane struts were one piece plywood - the wheels were tapered so were wide at the hub and narrow at the tread - wingspan about 24" (bit foggy on that could have been a bit more or less) - I think that I had a 19 McCoy redhead on it. Ring any bells with you? |

Re: Detective help needed
I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s reading older (60’s era) model magazines.
They had full page ads of those style CL models. Companies like Sterling. I’d have to look up some and then take some pictures for you.

Re: Detective help needed
Sounds like something from Walther Musciano. His models were kitted by Scientific Models.
The best search for Scientific control line models that I could find is on the AMA Site. https://modelaircraft.pastperfectonl...rol+line&utf8= If you have some time and can click through the pages, you might find it

Re: Detective help needed
Hah!
Immediate response from two stalwarts. I'm familiar with Walter's Scientific models Max, I actually called him up one day a few years ago to thank him and we had a real nice chat. This model was bigger than the Scientific Models that I'm familiar with; maybe it was a larger "series" that I hadn't tapped into? In fact when it was given to me back in the 50's it looked well used so it had been around fo awhile. I'll check out the leads from you and Andrew. Take care of yourselves guys! john |

Re: Detective help needed
I've got two catalogs from 1970 and 71. Attached is a photo of the Scientific models that describe having a carved fuselage and preshaped wings. However, the two biplanes shown don't match the engine size and wingspan you mention. There are no larger models listed in the catalogs using carved body and preshaped wings.
Another source of info might be the Outerzone plans archive. https://outerzone.co.uk G |

This is from a 1970’s American Aircraft Modeller I have at work here.

Re: Detective help needed
Looking at the Scientific pages folks posted the plane was quite a bit larger than I stated.
I low balled it because when you're a kid everything looks "big" so I didn't want to mislead. Looks like 36" wing might be a better number .................. |
