Sorry if this topic has been flogged to death, but is this the beginning of the end for all rc aircraft?

camera equipment could be mounted on many different types of 'drones'.

Re: rc and drones

Fortunately MARC SHARPE of MAAC has been on the Transport Canada UAV committee for a few years and has been advising MAAC on these matters.

"OTTAWA - The federal privacy commissioner says tiny, camera-equipped drones — some as small as birds or insects — could evade Canadian privacy law as people begin using the increasingly affordable aircraft to spy on others.
A new study by the commissioner's office says model aircraft flown by hobbyists may be left entirely unregulated as the federal government focuses on drones flown for commercial or police purposes.
In Canada, unmanned aerial vehicles are regulated by Transport Canada as aircraft under the Canadian Aviation Regulations.
But drones that weigh 35 kilograms or less do not require a special flight certificate when flown for recreational purposes.
The study says the exception poses concerns given that companies are beginning to sell small, inexpensive drones than can stream live video to smartphones.
The privacy commissioner's office worries the recreational drones could fuel the growing trend of people using technology to conduct surveillance on fellow citizens."

Re: rc and drones

The FPV crowd will take care of eradicating themselves, just a matter of time. The only question is whether they will take the rest of us with them, yet we embrace them as part of our hobby. Stupidity??? Absolutely.

You caught me in a bad mood.
What the hell is that all about and just exactly who do you think you are? Just because because you aren't into that part of the hobby, that makes it non-legitimate and not worthy of anybody participating? I see, you must be the all powerful guru who dictates what anybody is allowed to do - shall I bow before you and ask your permission before doing anything?

I have personally witnessed LOS flyers doing incredibly stupid things, endangering and harassing people with their aircraft.

There are idiots out there - some of them fly LOS, some FPV, some don't even fly at all. If we were to live our lives by avoiding any activity that has the potential to be ruined by idiots, we would all be living a pretty boring life.

Edit - It's all media sensationalism anyway. OMG! They are flying little cameras around - they will be able to spy on us!!! never mind that the binocular and telescope have been around for ages

US law makers have been struggling with this for some time already. An onslaught of bills introduced in state legislatures sought to regulate drones and often swept up FPV flying along with other forms of RC aviation in the category. Thanks to the efforts of the AMA progress has been made to safeguard hobby drones or rather FPV flying. Some traditional aero modellers believe FPV can only mean trouble for the hobby. For decades the old pattern was go to the hobby shop, choose a radio, pick an engine, join a club get some help and eventually you are flying. FPV has risen from a totally separate environment, it's called the "Internet". By doing an easy Google search it is very easy to purchase one.
Really, we have only 2 choices, we reject FPV or we embrace it. I say embrace it. MAAC has chosen to embrace it. We have an FPV committee and we even have a UAV committee. FPV came up with rules and guidelines to show regulators that we are responsible and that we can look after ourselves. FPV needs MAAC and we need them. MAAC's responsibility is to promote safety and show regulators such as Transport Canada that we are the experts when it comes to FPV. Richard Barlow is our representative with Transport Canada, Jeremy Cartlidge is our UAV committee chairman and Zoltan Pittner is our FPV committee chairman. These guys are dedicated to the hobby and are working to protect the freedom we have to fly our models.
The end of RC aircraft? I would say no. This is just the beginning.

Re: rc and drones

Remotely operated drones are the future. It is a steamroller that will not be stopped. The positives will BY FAR outweigh the negatives. Just like the internet when it was first created, so many negative whines about how bad it will be for mankind. Refresh my memory- weren't some people saying it should be banned?
How is the internet today? YES, there is some bad. But is it all bad? Does it do more good than bad? You tell me.

Drones, and robots in general are in the future. I dont think the powers that be would be so stupid to pass sweeping laws that will BAN all drone activity. Sorry, Spog my vision of the future includes a brighter, positive use for FPV, automation and drones

Of course they are. Why does this even need to be said? Nobody is talking about banning drones altogether.
The days of flying anywhere you want at altitudes above 400ft, out of LOS will come to an end. The FPV that MAAC envisions and supports does not even come close to the current state of affairs. Let's face it, the VAST MAJORITY of FPV'ers thumb their noses at the guidelines, some even break the law, all while hiding behind modeler's privileges.
Those days will end, and hopefully it will be a happy day for modelers.

OR... TC will develop an easier to use SFOC that FPV'ers can register a flight plan online the morning of, get approval the same day, NOTAM's issued the same day. Maybe some new form of collision avoidance may be developed for UAV/FPV and drones that improve safety. Haters will hate. Hey, whatever keeps you warm at night. But the future of FPV still looks positive from my end
