Lipo Batteries - Hard or Soft Cases
Hello fellow electric flyers,
I need a couple of 5000mAh 4S 14.8V 50C Smart LiPo batteries and I noticed that Spektrum has a package deal with a charger but they are hard cases. Does it matter? https://www.horizonhobby.com/spektru...dle-8s-spmxps8 Last edited by 88714; 06-05-2020 at 10:50 AM. Reason: Link was incorrect |

Re: Lipo Batteries - Hard or Soft Cases
Hard cases are required for surface rc vehicles in competition for better protection but when hooked in series take up much more room than a single 4S 5000 single pack, plus will be somewhat heavier. If you have the room and can carry the weight they will work.

Re: Lipo Batteries - Hard or Soft Cases
If weight and size does not matter in your application they will be fine. Generally hard case lipos are for surface vehicles that get smashed and bashed around every time they are driven. For flight we generally want light weight, and in many cases have limited room. Hope this helps some. Take care
Huh I see Stegl and I where typing at the same time. It appears you got your second opinion on your answer ! Ha Ha

Re: Lipo Batteries - Hard or Soft Cases
Thank you for your responses to my post. The Great Planes Mr Mulligan that I recently bought requires a 4S 3200 or greater capacity battery. So since I don’t have any I thought that it my be a good idea to buy the Spektrum battery combo. There is ample room inside the airplane.

Re: Lipo Batteries - Hard or Soft Cases
I'd put my money down on a couple of these. Like them.

Re: Lipo Batteries - Hard or Soft Cases
I looked at the weight of that hard case and it is not bad, 485 g which is right in line with many. The Gens Ace which Len listed is 480 g , I run many Gens Ace and have had great luck with them and would recommend them but if you want to try the new smart battery's it appears to be a good deal. Take care
