Re: New modeling organization in U.S.

So...why does AMA need a competitor? Why are people unhappy with AMA?

Re: New modeling organization in U.S.

There is a very long laundry list, but AMA is running out of money for one thing, the other is they refuse to take any advice from the membership, which is one reason why they are running out of money. I'm afraid to say that MAAC may just be in the same boat. The people in charge of both organization have all but given up.

MAAC President Peter Schaffer

"MAAC membership and marketing
It is no secret to anyone that the MAAC
membership numbers have flatlined and,
in fact, are slowly declining. There is a
recognition by the Board of Directors that
the approach that we have been using to
increase membership, is no longer paying
the dividends that is required.

The definition of insanity is doing the
same thing over and over while expecting
a different outcome. It was time to switch
from what we were doing, to doing
something different. It was time to think
outside the box."

Re: New modeling organization in U.S.

Hi Flier1,

You should open up in Canada too, as an added value, offer at least the same coverage as people are getting now 7M 3rd party liability, and offer DnO insurance as a value add.

No harm in providing choices to the membership.

MAAC President Peter Schaffler

MEMBERSHIP

There is no way to sugar coat the fact
that both the MAAC & the AMA (our USA
counterpart) memberships declined in 2018,
as compared to previous years. Our sport
is not alone in facing this challenge. It is
problematic for many other community and
sport organizations as well. The causes of
this problem are many and generally, beyond
our control. The membership income line
item for the 2019 budget has been adjusted
downward in anticipation of a further
membership loss. The only option is to adapt
or become a foot note in history.

One of the big costs to AMA and MAAC is the money spent on FAI!
MAAC spends almost $40K a year to keep the MAAC FAI boys happy for what 20 fliers - that just breeds apathy within MAAC.

Both AMA and MAAC forget that fields, frequencies, insurance, and DOT regulations are the priorities!

MAAC and the AMA get lost in past glories about winning some meanlingless FAI contest, have internal arguments about MAAC FAI trips to Paris to discuss meaningless rules - both have a magazine that for the cost should have been dropped years ago.

Times have changed - stuff like the NAts died years ago, too many directors are living in the past.!

Re: New modeling organization in U.S.

I just looked at AMA's 2017 IRS 990 tax filing, the most recent I can get online. They spend about $10,000,000 a year. Unfortunately, in 2017, they had to sell $1,800,000 in securities to meet their budget. Essentially, what they're doing is draining their long term assets rather than cut costs. Their revenue has been in near constant decline for almost two decades. Yes, they've raised dues and made great spin about it, but the reality is that once the sugar high wears off, about 2 years, the revenue is LOWER than before the dues increase.

So the question is, where does AMA find almost $2,000,000 in spending cuts? That's 20% of their 2017 budget and very significant. Their biggest line item is salary and benefits at $3,598,000 (Note 1, 2017 990, part IX, sum of lines 5 through . Think about that for a moment, 35% of all AMA spending pays for the HQ - or $26 out of every $75 member dues goes from your pocket to the staffs' pockets. Their second biggest is Model Aviation and Park Pilot at $1,400,000 (Note 1, 2017 990, part IX, line 24b). Their third biggest expense is insurance at $1,187,000 (Note 1, 2017 990, part IX line 23). The third largest is the "all other expenses" to the tune of over $900,000 (Note 1, 2017 990, part IX line 24e). Finding $2 million is going to be difficult. Look for yourself (Note 1, 2017 IRS 990, part IX, Statement of Functional Expenses).
