OT to glider conversion

I have been watching John Woodfield's old timer glider videos again (I just don't tire of those!) and I have an accident damaged Lanso Bomber that I have been inspired to turn into a slope glider. I'm not sure whether here is the right place to post progress or in the glider section.

Re: OT to glider conversion

Yes Sir! The Man has spoken so here we go!

This is what I am starting with. Poor Norm (rest his soul!) put a hot 2 stroke on it and just could not get the hang of how much these old birds pitch up powered like that! Did a figure 9 on take off the first time. I wasn't there for the next two crashes but he just couldn't get the hang of it. And yet mine flew so nice with a 90 4 stroke. Kept telling him I never used more than 1/3 throttle even on take off...

Re: OT to glider conversion

Here is the stripped down version. Fuse went in the garbage, it was repaired an re-repaired beyond what I was prepared to deal with.

The fuse in this picture we will talk about presently.

Re: OT to glider conversion

A number of years ago when all I had for Bombers was a 1/2A version converted to electric I set out to see what could be done with alternate woods. I liked the way Chester designed the fuse on the Bomber so set out to build one like on my little one but just scale it up. I kind of had rubber powered RC in mind but after building this fuse my attention drifted elsewhere and the fuse just sat.

So it turns out I guessed pretty close! This fuse is nearly identical in dimensions to the original full sized Bomber! Just a little longer in the snoot. Perfect!

Well, not quite perfect. If you look closely at the rear, the Sitka spruce longerons I used were not square so as I pinched them together at the rear it made the fuse slightly non symmetrical. Not a problem if I use the fuse in the normal position but if I stand it up diamond shape like the Bomber is... it is going to take some shimming to get the tail feathers square with the world! The nose as you can see is fine.

Or... I could lay it flat and call it a Lanso Record Breaker glider... the flying surfaces were the same...

Thoughts?

The front of the fuse will not be the right shape but it won't be for the Bomber either as I need a longer nose to balance out the tail group.

Re: OT to glider conversion

You missed your chance to influence the direction of this rebuild. I have decided to drop the Record Breaker idea and proceed with the Bomber motif in spite of the fact that the fuse is not perfectly concentric. So a little progress has been made between my Sand rail engine change and thawing out the water line into the house.

I am adding a bit of sheet balsa to the structure areas on the nose and prepping the tail feather saddle.

Re: OT to glider conversion

On to the broken wing repair. Thank goodness for getting the plans with this bird, made 3 new ribs to replace the worst broken ones.

Re: OT to glider conversion

My original idea was to make it a 3 piece wing because of the size and the steep dihedral angle for ease of transportation. After examining the dihedral joint with the music wire, plywood and epoxy Norm reinforced it with I realized there would be very little left to work with by the time I cut it apart.

Change of plans. A two piece wing it will be, I'm already into this area big time anyway.
