Excellent. For an airplane, start with something simple. A high wing trainer is always best. Buy something used on here for a good price and learn to fly on it. After you get good with the trainer, sell it to the next guy. If you buy a used trainer on here for say $200, use it for a summer and then sell it to the next guy for say $150, you got to learn to fly for a whole summer for a measly $50

Re: Do you fly aircraft and helicopter at the same time

I actually fly both. I'm primarily an airplane guy but i found that when i get stick time on the heli i get a better feel of the rudder inputs required when flying a heli and that transition into more use of the rudder when i fly my planes making for nicer manoeuvres. When i first started to fly planes i barely used the rudder and it was mostly for taxing and an afterthought once in the air, now i use all channels.

Re: Do you fly aircraft and helicopter at the same time

I started with Heli, 1986 after few years I decided to get into planes.

One instructor at our club cannot understand why I constantly move the rudder stick, it's something you pick up while flying heli. After I got my wings, it was his turn to learn to fly heli. my turn to help him. And his comments was... now he understand why the left stick is always moving.

Ian Kristensen (Canadian World Class pattern competitor) competed in the helicopter division during the Nats long ago. He commented that flying helis made him a better pattern flier as he was more attentive to the use of the rudder.

Re: Do you fly aircraft and helicopter at the same time

All joking aside, I started with fixed wing and then got into helis years later. I think you can fly both. Once you've got enough experience they're both intuitive activities.

Re: Do you fly aircraft and helicopter at the same time

I am a helicopter guy, but used to fly aerobatic foam airplane for a year.
I would say, if you are serious into helicopters (fly even basic 3D), airplanes will be so boring for you, unless you participate in some activity like some competition or air combat.
I remember, when I put my airplane into the air, after a couple of trim flights I was able to do most of aerobatics at once. There is no serious axis inversion, no backward flight or drift into unexpected direction. Airplanes just straight forward. And it will not harm you helicopter skills at all.
Buy yes, air combat is a very big fun. If you find a buddy to fly with you it will be really great.
Building your own airplane is a completely different story.
