Do you fly aircraft and helicopter at the same time

I have been in RC helicopter hobby since 9 years , started from very beginner to sport and some 3D flying .
Have never flown airplane but thinking to start learning but wondering if it would effect my heli skills or it can be worked together?

Re: Do you fly aircraft and helicopter at the same time

You can absolutely transition to airplanes. Each form of flying requires its own discipline, but the hand-eye co-ordination and the smoothness of operating the controls can be transposed from one to the other.
as a matter of fact, I think flying both makes you a better pilot overall.

Re: Do you fly aircraft and helicopter at the same time

I flew Heli's for a few years then added planes to my fleet. I didn't find it affected my heli flying, it is nice to mix it up. However I usually only take heli's or plane's to the field, I tend not to mix in one visit...

Re: Do you fly aircraft and helicopter at the same time

I started helis after I was a fixed wing pilot. I found flying around is very similar, and have continued to do both for many years since. Although my helicopter flying is pretty “mild” - more loops, rolls, stall turns and just flying around - much like I would do with a fixed wing plane. No 3D stuff.

if its got a wing or two and an engine - I like it!

Re: Do you fly aircraft and helicopter at the same time

I have flown helis for over 35 years and tried only one season of fixed wing - resorting to planes a few years ago due to my failing eyesight. However, I wanted a more demanding hobby and went back to flying helis. They fly so differently. IMO somewhat different skill set depending on skill level. I've flown 169 logged flights this season and still enjoying it. It's all fun. Depends on how challenging you want your flying to be.

Re: Do you fly aircraft and helicopter at the same time

As mentioned above flying both is a none issue, especially if you keep flying both regularly. TSKCA has me beat as I only have 101 heli flights logged this year but about 46 airplane flights now and they are growing fast. The only issue I have comes after I have flown heli allot and not much plane, I can have a tendency to pull the throttle back in inverted maneuvers with the plane but I have learnt to think about the throttle hand when flying planes. Both can be as challenging as you want , you just have to take the challenge on.
Take care and have fun !

Re: Do you fly aircraft and helicopter at the same time

Hey, Dennis, the other problem is landing. A heli can be landed at your feet every time. Darn planes either sink too fast or float forever before stalling. lol

Agreed, both can be a lot of fun and challenging too.

Re: Do you fly aircraft and helicopter at the same time

I learned to fly fixed wing many years ago and started flying helicopter just a few years ago. It takes a lot of concentration to fly heli but once I got the hang of it I found I was better flying fixed wing as I used the rudder more to make corrections.

Re: Do you fly aircraft and helicopter at the same time

I would not recommend flying both an airplane and a helicopter at the same time. Trying to operate 2 separate transmitters at the same time and trying to watch two different aircraft simultaneously would be nearly impossible.

Re: Do you fly aircraft and helicopter at the same time

I was a long time Fixed wing pilot that took up Heli's as a change of pace. I agree with lots of the other posters that I think it makes you a better overall pilot. If you don't fly either discipline for a while the first few moments of the "transition flights" can be interesting but the brain is an amazing creation that adapts back very quickly...

That said - I think it might be easy to pick up "bad habits" from either discipline to the other if one was a top notch competitive flyer..But I'm not, and I will continue to enjoy both...
