Re: pinion gear wearing out

Usually, with a hard gear meshing with one softer the harder wears quicker. The reason is foreign material is forced into the softer material and acts as an abrasive surface.

What are you using for a lube? Avoid any petroleum products as that simply sets up a sticky surface coating that attracts and holds any dirt, etc.

With my helis I use beeswax on the main gear. It does not attract any foreign material and any excess is simply thrown off. I was given some from a coworker that does leather work, but still have a tube of "Door Eze" from decades ago:

Re: pinion gear wearing out

Is this a savage ?? how much running do you have on it . is it the factory set with the steel pinion and plastic spur . if so you can get a hardened steel set that lasts a bit better but they all wear . To increase wear life try to run ratios with the largest pinions possible , if you want to keep the same ratio you will have to increase both gears . small pinions chew the gears up real fast ... Yeah never use any lube whatsoever

Re: pinion gear wearing out

Pinion gear has a lot less teeth than the spur gear so the pinion will where out more.

Re: pinion gear wearing out

I don't use the method shown in this video but there is nothing wrong with it.

When you know the feeling of the mesh you don't need the paper anymore. Also note that if you put a new gear with a worn gear both will be worn.
