Re: Avios (Hobbyking) 90mm Mig 17 PNP in Black Diamond aerobatic team colours!
After several issues with the stock retract door sequencer, and attempts with other controllers, we have decided to simplify things and just remove the main gear sequencing doors. Practically not visible on the ground or in the air. This can save a little weight too once the servos get pulled out.

58g removed by deleting the troublesome main gear doors.
A side benefit is now we have two spare servos (one reversed).

Re: Avios (Hobbyking) 90mm Mig 17 PNP in Black Diamond aerobatic team colours!
Thanks to Tim for letting me know about the steel weights located ahead of the nose gear!
39g lighter once removed. Used a sharpened large tube to cut the hole and a pair of forceps to extract the two steel pucks.

Re: Avios (Hobbyking) 90mm Mig 17 PNP in Black Diamond aerobatic team colours!
My father Chris has fabricated some mechanical brakes which will be activated by the existing flap servos. Same idea used on a few of our other jets. Made from brass and solder.

Re: Avios (Hobbyking) 90mm Mig 17 PNP in Black Diamond aerobatic team colours!
Applied the new red stars from Callie's Graphics and it makes the stock colours "pop".
Very pleased. The under wing stars will wait till the landing light is installed. We will likely put it in the scale location for this particular aircraft and leave it extended and on at all times. Always a help with orientation to have a light shining. https://callie-graphics.com/collecti.../mig-17-n6953x She did the stars right by having red then surrounded by white lines so the airframe colours show in between the red and white. It is sad that Avios chose the bland white stars IMO. They should have deleted the main gear doors and provided drop tanks.

Re: Avios (Hobbyking) 90mm Mig 17 PNP in Black Diamond aerobatic team colours!
58 flights so far. The trick to the gear is to keep the retract switch in the UP position, turn on model, allow inner doors to cycle and the retract sequence is armed. A little different but no big deal. Spending some time on the linkage set up results in no door issues. Really liking the jet and have ordered the Henke turbine conversion for the Xicoy X45.

Re: Avios (Hobbyking) 90mm Mig 17 PNP in Black Diamond aerobatic team colours!
It truly is an awesome jet! Let’s hope HK / Avios comes out with some more of these larger jets.
Just installed the LED landing light! Powered from the aileron 6v power wires. Light will stay on as long as the plane is on helping with orientation

The mechanical paddle brakes are now hooked up! Brakes get pulled when the flaps are retracted.

Re: Avios (Hobbyking) 90mm Mig 17 PNP in Black Diamond aerobatic team colours!
Windy and cold but today we flew with the new light and brakes. The light is quite visible in flight and the brakes also worked reasonably well. The wind was so strong the plane refused to turn around at the upwind end of the runway unless the brakes were applied to force weight onto the nose gear. I rigged up a spring loaded toggle switch to apply the brakes (by retracting the flaps) and to reduce my idle up throttle (to shorten the landing roll). Good fun, but looking forward to a warmer less windy day to do more flights.
