Re: Top Flite DC3 Conversion to Electric

Bottom sheeting glued on this weekend.
Even though I cut the sheeting to plan, there was a gap in the sheeting where it fits around the cowl. This I can easily fill later once the sheeting is dry.

Another shot of both bottom nacelles covered. Note the retracts are covered over with sheeting. This will be cut away once the glue dries.

Re: Top Flite DC3 Conversion to Electric

Started cutting out the landing gear bay.

Before going to bed last night I also filled in the little gaps in the sheeting.

Once the gear bays have been finished, it looks like its time for spackle and sanding

Re: Top Flite DC3 Conversion to Electric

I have been working away at the little details for the last few days.

So many little things needed to be done, but she is almost there.

Cowls are done and sanded, but it might still need a little more spackling and sanding here and there.

The control surfaces are ready to be covered. I will be using solartex, and then will paint them along with he rest of the plane.

For the plane, I will use light-weight glass cloth with water-based poly urethane (WBPU). I still have to fit the fairings to the fuselage. These are plastic. I am wondering if I should put them on now and cover them with glass cloth, or should I glass the plane and put them on later? Ideas? Suggestions?

Agreed! Plane looks great in the bones. IMHO though, 3 ounce cloth is overkill! This plane was designed to have all of the structural strength that it needs. The fiberglass cloth is only needed to provide a solid smooth surface for final paint. My Top Flite P-47 (giant scale) was finished with .75 ounce cloth and it has more than enough strength (and very little additional weight).

Re: Top Flite DC3 Conversion to Electric

That's nice work Max, I also finished mine with .75oz fb and it added nice strenght to the wings. Mine finally flew its first flight last weekend. A trick of the trade is, never let it stall. Its easy to snap especially at take off and when turning. You must take all the possible speed on the strip before pushing it up and add throttle when turning. Its such a nice plane to see on the ground and in the air.
Unfortunately I find the wing a little long for my car, so its for sale.
Here is a picture of that day and one of my new RV4. A video will follow.
Cheers

Re: Top Flite DC3 Conversion to Electric

Hmm....2014. 2014?? Yep. This puppy has been sitting idle and forlorn since then. I've just been so busy with other priorities, other models that needed to be attended first.....
This time of year I would be doing a lot of travelling for work with hardly any time at home, let alone in the workshop. This lock-down changes everything.

Well, this weekend I finally got around to putting the first layer of fibreglass cloth and WBPU on the undersides.... I put it out in the sun to speed the curing.
