40% Carden Edge 540 - BBT - Build Thread

Well, I made the trip down to Burlington Vermont today and picked up my new baby!! This is supposed to be my Winter 2009 build project but I may just have to get at it slowly once Jim's Baby Yak is finished!!

I had a line on a Extra 260 and Extra 330 in the 40% size, but I broke down and bought a new Edge 540 kit from Carden for the following reasons:
1) Carden's new kits have the superlight foam (saves 16 oz on a 40%)
2) Carden's new wood is phenomenal (and it save 8 oz on a 40%)
3) I had the 35% Carden and it was a 3D monster - I couldn't resist a 40% 3D Ship!
4) There's something about that straight leading edge that I love!!

Four huge boxes + a box for the extra milled landing gear filled my Odyssey quite well!

I plan on pulling out every stop I can on this build and making it super light. I also want to experiment with coring the foam cores to save weight and this will be a build with the utmost detail!

Here goes

Re: 40% Carden Edge 540 Build Thread

What did I get myself into! It`s huge!

Everything is packed super well and I finally have a Carden kit with the new wood. Once you work with this wood, you will always build Cardens, guaranteed.

Dennis` selection and grouping of the wood is amazing!

This is incentive to get the Baby Yak done now

I will put a DA150 in it with A123s and 8711`s all around on a powersafe 12x Receiver. My DA150 is currently on cans, but I may go to standard mufflers to keep is simple and super light! I love the sound of the cans, but this is going to be all about 3D and super light!

Hey Trevor, I guess I'll be the first. HOLY CRAP, NOT ANOTHER ONE!!! I'm still waiting for Jim's airplane to be done.

Man, I struggled thru one kit build this winter, and wrecked it pretty good today, I might add, and you've got number 3 ready to go. AARRGGHH.

Seriously, good luck, I love your builds, I go back to them all the time for something.

Take care, Daren

Thanks Darren for the compliments! I've got the building bug and after every build now I get thinking of all the stuff I'd like to do a little different. On this one I plan to pull out all the stops and see just how creative we can get!

You said you smashed yours up pretty good... what happened ????

Re: 40% Carden Edge 540 - BBT - Build Thread

Which one, is more like it. The first was a maiden of a Shark-e http://www3.sympatico.ca/k.d.park/SEweb.html. It was my first hand toss, and I don't think I threw it hard enough. Very experienced flier on the controls (not me), and it nosed over hard. Wing has a cut into it to the spar, not thru, but the nose is removed aft of the firewall, so that will be a challenging repair.

#2 was my H9 ultra stick. Figured I would fly anyways, since I had 2 planes at the field. I was just goofing around, sort of practicing to do my instructor rating, so I was doing lots of touch and goes. Last landing of the morning and the plane touched down beautiful, and the gear came off. I did a hard landing last week, but no damage, other than a prop. I gave the gear a tug then, and it seemed tight. Anyways, its all glued up, and I'll recover the belly in the morning when the epoxy is set. Since 2007, this is my first time I've needed to do some repairs, so I guess I've been lucky.

Have you decided on a theme for the 540, or are you going to keep the suspense going for the build? Take care, Daren

hi Trev, I know what you mean about the quality of the Carden kits. I love to build and since doing my first Carden back in 2001, I can't look at another kit, they all look like junk by comparison!

Last years project was a 35% 260, it's the first one that i vacuum bagged all the skins on the foam, used epoxy and saved considerable weight over the standard weight and poly urethane method. I'd never go back.

You might want to consider it, of course you won't be able to core the foam as planned if you vaccum bag.

Best of luck with the build.

Mike

Hey Mike! I'm actually in the process of investigating a vacuum bagging system also and I'd go with the West System Epoxy (this is what I used on a carbon fiber race car in University and it was awesome). I'm now trying to determine how much (if any) weight I could save with the epoxy method vs ProBond and the ability to core out the foam.

Cheers

Trev

Ouch! Sorry to hear about the day! Always a good mixture of good days and bad in this hobby.

I've got a couple covering schemes in mind, two of which are the Blane Austin Scheme and a scale replica of the Red Bull Air Race plane!!!

Just fuse, hatch and cowl to cover + equipment install to go. When you come back from Vancouver it will be all done!!
